UCM aviation has expanded over the last five decades from a program with only 25 students to a full aviation education program with approximately 500 students, and has a reputation for quality while trying to provide competent aviation professionals who can fill a global pilot shortage. The program has developed from a fleet of four Cessna 150s to a fleet of more than 24 aircraft ranging from the Cessna 172 Skyhawk to the high-performance Beechcraft B58 Baron, as well as cutting-edge flight simulation systems.
Skyhaven Airport is the location of UCM's Aviation Program.
Max B. Swisher Skyhaven Airfield at the University of Central Missouri is Missouri's only university-owned airport. The airfield, located three miles northwest of Warrensburg, serves as a training location for UCM's nationally known aviation program. It also serves as the community airport for Johnson County, Missouri. The airport was named after Max Boothe Swisher, a late Warrensburg entrepreneur and businessman who donated the airport to UCM in 1968. The gift prompted the development of UCM's aviation and other related programs.

The UCM Flight Operations Management degree option combines a strong business/management foundation with an in-depth examination of the aviation sector and flight credentials. This one-of-a-kind degree program combines core aviation business/management education with the Private Pilot Certificate and the Instrument Rating.
This one-of-a-kind advanced degree gives extensive exposure to all aspects of aviation safety, as well as the development, implementation, and administration of aviation safety programs in commercial, industry, or governmental aviation settings.
