Aircraft maintenance technology is a good career path now more than ever. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) licenses airplane maintenance technicians (or A&P mechanics as they are more frequently called) to maintain aircraft of all types. Major airlines, FAA repair stations, and even aircraft manufacturers are always on the lookout for certified airplane mechanics to construct and maintain aircraft and associated equipment.
Anyone interested in a career in aircraft maintenance should have a basic understanding of arithmetic and physics. It is also advantageous to be mechanically inclined. Reading comprehension is a valuable ability to have. Much of the labor requires physical talents such as standing, bending, and crawling into cramped spaces. At times, the ability to work on scaffolding using power tools is essential.
Professionals in aircraft maintenance technology may work for big and regional airlines, air taxi services, fixed-base operators, large enterprises, or the federal government. In addition, some aircraft maintenance technology professionals with commercial acumen create their own shops. Nationally, licensed journeymen make between $30,000 and $68,000 per year. Major airline employees may expect to earn the most money and enjoy the best benefits.
Trident Technical College assists in meeting the demand for educated and qualified aviation maintenance technicians by offering either an authorized associate degree program or a certificate program that prepares students for FAA certification as airframe and powerplant technicians. The FAA has certified TTC's Aircraft Maintenance Technology program under 14 CFR Part 147 (#EC9T107R).
