Our FAA-approved Powerplant and Airframe programs produce highly employable graduates who are prepared to take the FAA's Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) license exam following graduation.
You have the option of earning a degree or a certificate in either Airframe or Powerplant.
Education that is truly hands-on
We believe that time-on-task must be included in your education. This entails spending time learning from expert educators in real-world settings and scenarios. That is why the State Tech campus has more than 50 labs, an automotive bay, an aircraft hangar, and more than 40 acres of land dedicated to our heavy equipment operations department.
The Aviation Maintenance program trains students to work in the aircraft maintenance business. Airlines, aircraft manufacturing businesses, repair stations, the United States military, and general aviation fixed base operators all employ aircraft mechanics. Some mechanics focus on a specific component of an aircraft, such as metal or fabric surfaces, avionics equipment, hydraulic systems, landing gear, propellers, or engines. Others, notably those hired by smaller fixed base operators, operate on a variety of aircraft systems and may inspect and repair a variety of aircraft types. Since 1970, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has certified State Technical College of Missouri as an Aviation Maintenance Technician School. The Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering has also accredited the Aviation Maintenance program (ATMAE).
The curriculum offers substantial hands-on instruction in small classes taught by highly qualified instructors. Non-destructive testing, composites, electrical system troubleshooting, and reciprocating and turbine engine theory and maintenance are among the topics covered in the program.
Many positions in the airplane maintenance business necessitate the certification of mechanics by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This certification is applicable to two ratings: airframe and powerplant. In Aviation Maintenance, three options are available: an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Aviation Maintenance, a certificate in Aviation Maintenance (Powerplant), and a certificate in Aviation Maintenance (General) (Airframe). The AAS degree program gives the necessary expertise to achieve an aviation mechanic certificate with Airframe and Powerplant ratings. Each certificate program gives the experience necessary to achieve an aircraft mechanic certificate with the appropriate rating for the program finished.
General, Airframe, and Powerplant are the three sections of the Aviation Maintenance program. Students in the Associate of Applied Science degree program typically finish the General and Powerplant portions by the end of the second semester and the Airframe section by the end of the fourth semester.
Students must: 1) earn a C (70 percent) or better in all "Core Curriculum" courses, 2) pass the FAA General and Powerplant or Airframe written examinations, and 3) pass the FAA Oral and Practical examinations for the General and Powerplant or Airframe sections to graduate with an Aviation Maintenance Associate of Applied Science degree.
Students must receive a grade of C (70 percent) or better in all "Core Curriculum" courses and take and pass the FAA General and FAA Powerplant written tests to graduate from the Aviation Maintenance Powerplant One-Year Certificate program.
Students must receive a grade of C (70 percent) or better in all "Core Curriculum" courses and take and pass the FAA General and FAA Airframe written exams to graduate from the Aviation Maintenance Airframe One-Year Certificate program.

The Aircraft Maintenance program's aim is to give individuals with educational experiences that allow them to gain the skills required for employment in the aviation maintenance business.
The program's goals are to give students with the chance to develop: technical skills required for employment in the aircraft maintenance industry.
Technical knowledge is required to obtain mechanic certification under Federal Aviation Regulation, Part 65.
Reading, writing, maths, and science thinking are core general education skills.
