Since its inception in 1940, SOWELA Technical Community College has been educating the region's workforce. The college was formed in 1938 by an act of the Louisiana State Legislature and has gone by numerous names since then.
By the 1990s, SOWELA was one of Louisiana's largest and most progressive post-secondary technical colleges. As a result, the Louisiana Community and Technical College System Board of Supervisors decided to redesignate it as a technical community college on July 1, 2003. Our mission and fundamental values have remained consistent and relevant throughout the school's more than 80-year history in order to address the evolving needs of the community that we serve.
SOWELA is committed to student success, integrity, collaboration, innovation, access, and diversity, and aims for excellence in teaching, training, and service.
SOWELA Technical Community College now has a leadership team in place that is focused on expansion, improving the academic experience, and planning for the school's future. A new strategy plan has been adopted and is currently being implemented across the board. SOWELA has a promising future.
The Aviation Maintenance Technology program's objective is to provide a hands-on learning environment as well as practical application of aviation maintenance training. This school is a federally controlled Aviation Training School, certified by the FAA, and an accredited program of the Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE). After completing their training, candidates are eligible to take the FAA Airframe and Powerplant certification exams. The certification process comprises of two testing segments: multiple choice testing and oral and practical testing on the General, Airframe, and Powerplant portions, each of which are administered by an FAA Designated Maintenance Examiner (DME). After passing these examinations, the graduate is issued the FAA's Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) Mechanic Certificate. Once training for these areas has been completed, students can choose to test for the FAA Airframe or Powerplant certificates individually. All students who finish the aircraft maintenance training receive a Technical Diploma from SOWELA (66 credit hours). Students get an Associates of Applied Science degree after completing 81 credit hours of aviation repair training (66 credit hours) and general studies courses (15 credit hours). We are committed to ensuring that our students gain prior learning credit for equivalent military training (competency exam required) and/or transferred credits from other FAA Part 147 training schools (grade C or higher from FAA certified courses).
SOWELA ensures that our programs are equipped with cutting-edge technology. This is a great program thanks to new equipment, laboratory building expansion, and updated curriculum. SOWELA has purchased a Boeing 727, seven lightweight aircraft, three helicopters, a Redbird Flight Simulator, virtual reality welding training, virtual reality paint training, PT-6 engine trainers, a CFM-56 engine, and much more over the years. The Aviation Maintenance Technology program's curriculum is updated as needed to keep up with industry standards and FAA criteria. The program works with a network of industry partners to guarantee that the training is current, technologically advanced, and prepares students for employment. Our industry partners provide advice to the program as well as internships, scholarships, and equipment. This, combined with each instructor's 35+ years of experience, ensures an unrivaled training atmosphere for our students. SOWELA is one of four FAA-certified Part 147 Aircraft Maintenance Training Schools in Louisiana and has been providing aviation maintenance training for 50 years.
The Aviation Maintenance Technology program fosters critical thinking and lifelong learning by providing a safe and healthy learning environment. Furthermore, the program promotes the development of ties between students and companies in order to foster skill enhancement and continuous advancement in the sector.
