Aviation Maintenance Technician
Lane Community College's FAA Approved Part 147 School, located at the Aviation Academy at Eugene Airport in Oregon, will prepare you to be an Airframe and Powerplant Certificated Mechanic! Our graduates have gone on to successful employment in heavy-lift helicopters, regional airlines, and general aviation.
Is the Aviation Maintenance Technician program the right fit for you?
Consider a career in Aviation Maintenance if you enjoy being around aircraft or working with your hands on intricate devices. Many students enter the aircraft maintenance program with little or no mechanical expertise, but they soon become into skilled mechanics as their training progresses. You'll service, maintain, and troubleshoot airplanes and rotorcraft as an Airframe and Powerplant Certificated Mechanic (A&P). Consider mending a wing spar, installing a jet engine, or adjusting the track of a helicopter blade! The airplane cannot fly without the assistance of A&P!
What will you learn if you enroll in the Aviation Maintenance Technician program?
Your sessions will consist of a mix of factual and theoretical lectures and hands-on laboratories. You will discover:
- Federal Aviation Administration Regulations
- Mathematics and physics
- Precision measurement and non-destructive testing
- Fabrication of aircraft hardware and fluid lines
- Corrosion prevention
- Inspection of Aircraft
- Ground transportation and operations
- Drawing of an airplane
- Calculations, electrical theory, and troubleshooting
- Electrical components, systems, and schematics for aircraft
- Fuel systems for aircraft
- Instrumentation systems for aircraft and engines
- Protection against fire
- Weight and equilibrium
- Aircraft rigging and assembly
- Rain and ice control
- Systems for communication and navigation
- Welding
- Positioning and alerting systems
- Systems for landing gear
- Hydraulic and pneumatic power transmission systems
- Structural sheet metal repair
- Structures made of wood, aircraft coverings, and paint finishes
- Repair of composite structures
- Cabin climate control systems
- Operation and maintenance of a reciprocating piston engine
- Operation and maintenance of turbine engines
- Engine induction, exhaust, ignition, fuel, ignition, and lubrication systems are all examples of systems.
- Theory and repair of propellers
- Rigging a helicopter and tracking its blades
The aviation maintenance program meets or exceeds all FAA Part 147 standards and emphasizes hands-on instruction to prepare you for FAA tests and a career in aviation. Every day, you will learn something new and useful. A riveted aluminum repair, a carbon fiber layup, multimeter electrical troubleshooting, a landing gear check on a jet, and an engine overhaul with power assurance runs might all be done in a single term. After finishing your degree, you'll be able to work on practically any aircraft repair.
Professional Pilot in Aviation
Lane Aviation Academy offers professional, safe flight training. We offer training for Private Pilot, Instrument Rating, Commercial Pilot, Multi-Engine, Certified Flight Instructor, Certified Flight Instructor Instrument, and Multi-Engine Instructor. KEUG airport in Eugene, Oregon(link is external) is the ideal size for pilot training – not too big, but with approach, tower, and ground controllers, as well as airline service.
Lane's Flying Technology Program offers a two-year Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Aviation Professional Pilot degree that includes Commercial Pilot flight instruction in single and multiengine airplanes with instrument rating. Additional training for Flight Instructors with aircraft, instrument, and multi-engine ratings is available.
Flight training and ground instruction are combined so that you can fly on the first day. Our dual-control Piper and Cessna planes provide a secure flight training environment.
The Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission has approved this program. Our tower-controlled, multi-runway airport offers an excellent training environment.
Flight training in Oregon includes a wide range of weather conditions, geographical factors, and airport complications. The Eugene area provides a safe setting for cloud flight training. Clouds are present in Oregon's weather.
The weather is ideal for safe instrument training in real-world settings. We sail through the clouds.
Consider the following information:
- Prior to beginning the Private Pilot Airplane Course, applicants must receive a combination FAA Airman's Medical Certificate and Student Pilot Certificate. This is a requirement for solo flight. This must be obtained by an Aviation Medical Examiner for new pilots (link is external). Although you can become a Private Pilot with a 3rd Class Medical, we recommend that you apply for a 1st Class Medical if you want to be an airline captain.
- Transportation Security Administration (TSA) standards in the United States Part 1552 of Title 49 CFR Prior to teaching, each flight school requires that all persons getting flight training establish their citizenship. This is required for training leading to initial privileges for single or multiengine planes, as well as for instrument rating.
- Citizens of the United States must present documentation proving their citizenship. You will receive a list of these documents along with your acceptance letter to the flight program.
- Prior to flight training, non-US citizens must obtain approval from the Transportation Security Administration (link is external). This is a federal government process that takes some time. Please contact Lane Community College's Flight Technology Department as soon as possible so that we can assist you with this procedure.
- Applicants who are not citizens of the United States should also contact the International Programs department for college enrollment information. Before being admitted into the Flight Technology program, international students must first be accepted into the college.
- No flights will be dispatched until the TSA has given its approval and/or documents proving U.S. citizenship have been provided. Please visit the AOPA website for more information on this judgement and the TSA.
- Each semester, around 40 students are enrolled in the Flight Training program. Students are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, based on the date of their application. It is recommended that you submit your application at least one term before your chosen start date. Aviation ground classes are open to any enrolled college students who are interested in aviation and do not require admittance into the Flight Technology program.
- TSA requirements are satisfied before students are placed on the flight schedule on a first-come, first-served basis.
- A copy of the FAA Medical Certificate is kept on file.
- You have signed up for Flight Lab credits.
