Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) is a four-semester program that teaches students to inspect, repair, maintain, and overhaul aircraft and engine components and systems. This curriculum is aimed to introduce students to the rewarding profession of aviation maintenance while also introducing them to the various aircraft systems' operation theories. This curriculum also completely prepares students for the FAA tests required to achieve their Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certification as an Aircraft Maintenance Technician.
AMT students study a wide range of courses, including physics and aerodynamics, as well as engine systems and aircraft structures. Students learn about the mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and structural components of fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. Instruction is given both in the classroom and in the hangar/shop. Students get the opportunity to learn while working on FAA-certified aircraft.
After successfully completing this program, the student will be awarded a Technical Certificate in Aviation Maintenance Technology. Students may also earn an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree by completing a minimum of 15 academic hours in addition to or in conjunction with this program.
Hinds Community College is an FAA-approved Aviation Maintenance Technician school that follows the requirements outlined in FAR Part 147. The Aircraft Maintenance Technician certification (A&P rating) process entails passing written, oral, and practical examinations in each of the three subject areas taught: general, powerplant, and airframe. The FAA Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME) administers the exams, which can be taken at the school. Before progressing to the fourth semester of this program, the FAA Powerplant Rating must be attained.
Students can also join the Hinds Community College Alumni Association's Aviation Chapter and enjoy the company of others who share their interests. More information can be found by clicking here.
The vast majority of AMT Program alumni have gone on to achieve success in the aviation industry. Opportunities abound all across the world.
