Gavilan College Aviation Maintenance Technology

The Gavilan College Aviation Maintenance Technology Program is FAA-accredited under CFR 14 FAR Part 147 and offers a Certificate of Completion in Aviation Maintenance Technology for both the airframe and the powerplant. Gavilan College also provides an Associate of Science Degree with a major in Aviation, as well as extra General Education classes.

The Aviation Program adheres to FAA curriculum rules and divides its classes into three categories: general (AMT100 & AMT101), airframe (AMT110 & AMT111), and powerplant (AMT120 & AMT121). There are two full semester classes in each area. General classes are prerequisites for either an Airframe or a Powerplant certificate. The fall and spring semesters are when classes are held. New students can begin in the fall or spring semesters. Students will study General and Airframe classes concurrently during their first year, followed by Powerplant classes their second year.

Classes consist of a combination of lectures and hands-on labs. Gavilan's San Martin Airport (E16) facility hosts classes and labs. Students must furnish basic hand tools in addition to textbooks. Download the Recommended Tool List for Aviation Maintenance Technology.

Students must complete the required hours for each subject in order to meet FAA certification standards. Each general class is 200 hours long, for a total of 400 hours. Each airframe class is 375 hours long, for a total of 750 hours. Each powerplant class is 375 hours long, for a total of 750 hours. An Airframe certificate of completion necessitates the completion of both General and Airframe classes for a total of 1050 hours. A Powerplant certificate of completion necessitates the completion of both General and Powerplant programs, for a total of 1050 hours. 1900 hours are required for combined airframe and powerplant licenses.
